Low Fat Diet

The objective of low fat diet is to reduce the total fat in the diet and usually concentrates on getting the amount of saturated fat down as low as possible.  Low fat diet also focuses on reducing the saturated fat and trans fat.  Low fat diet however does allow foods with essential unsaturated fats, usually in fairly small quantities.

A low fat diet may have around 25% fat, around 20-25% protein and 50-55% carbohydrate.  Low fat diet with less than 20% fat is referred to very low fat diet.  There are a few well-known diet regimes that come into low fat category such as glycemic index diet and fat burner diet.

Low Fat Diet  - How It Works

Low fat diet works by cutting down the intake of fat which is the most energy dense nutrient that you can eat with highest calories per gram.  Low fat diet reduces the number of calories consumed and create a calorie deficit that produces slow and steady weight loss.

Low fat diet is usually high in carbohydrates, thus most low fat diet recommends high consumption of complex and unprocessed carbohydrates such as whole grains, jacket potatoes and pulses, and plenty of fruits and vegetables to satisfy hunger.

Low Fat Diet - Common Problems to Be Avoided

One common problem with low fat diet is the tendency to increase consumption of sugars and eliminate the essential fats.  If whole grains are consumed and sugar is avoided, the diet is usually successful for weight loss. During the 90's when low fat snacks were first produced, many did not realize that the low fat foods they consumed had less fat but are high in sugar.  The increased consumption of these "low fat diet foods" caused a lot of people to gain weight instead of losing as supposed to in a low fat diet.  This has created a misconception about low fat diet.  If you decide to choose low fat diet, stick with whole and fresh foods, and avoid the processed snacks.

Essential fatty acids should be supplemented if you are on an Ornish or Pritikin type of low fat diet.  Omega-3 oils which are found in oily ocean fish are also important for healthy nerve function and for controlling cholesterol and inflammation.
